To the casual observer, Bible quizzing is a sport in which teams match knowledge, jumping speed, memory, and quickness of response against one another on a designated portion of scripture. However, the program offers much more than just competition and sport. It involves memorizing a specific book or books of the Bible for each quiz year, which runs from September to May, and by becoming involved in memorization, young people develop a love and respect for the Bible. The Word is planted in their hearts and dynamically influences them in their everyday lives.
Students, ranging from grades 6 to 12, compete against each other, and this diversity allows Bible quizzing to be a unique learning experience – younger students are able to learn from older students and vice versa. The quizzing program also encourages making friendships with students from other churches, sharpening mental skills, learning a cooperative team spirit and gaining respect for coaches and officials.
We normally have four quiz meets (tournaments) per year — one is usually in Ottawa and the rest are out of town. The quiz year ends with a weekend at Joy Bible Camp, which is always a fun and enjoyable time for all who take part.
Students who take part in the Bible quizzing program are required to commit to learn a minimum number of verses and to have a positive attitude! We normally hold team practices on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00pm.
