From its beginning as a response to a specific refugee crisis, the work of the refugee sponsorship committee has developed into an ongoing ministry of East Gate Alliance Church. We anticipate that as long as unjust governments, wars, famines and persecution continue, there will be a need for refugee ministry. Our primary work involves bringing selected refugees to Canada through private sponsorship, within the limits of our capacity. In addition to private sponsorship, we have also assisted with efforts to bless refugees that have come to our city by other means.
Jesus and his family were refugees in Egypt, as were Joseph’s brothers and their families. Ruth and Naomi later sought refuge in Israel during a time of famine. One might say Ruth was sponsored by her Israelite mother-in-law Naomi, and she eventually became the great-grandmother of King David. In all these cases, God met them with mercy and provision in their host country. It is our conviction that we show kindness to refugees, as we have an opportunity to change their lives and to influence nations.
"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."
— Hebrews 13:2 (ESV)
We already have several families that we have committed to sponsor, and unfortunately, we are not in a position to accept any more applications for sponsorship until 2022.
